Spring Assessments - 1/14 & 1/21

Assessments are right around the corner and we are looking forward to seeing all of you in person! 😊 Please know that although assessments are a very important part of the Little League, we understand that for some it can be intimidating, especially if they have never participated in an assessment.  Our goal is to have our SMLL parents and players understand that the coaches are evaluating players’ relative abilities allowing them to give each player a proper grade based on ability.  Every Serra Mesa player has a place in the Serra Mesa Little League, and this assessment process is they best and safest way to determine where they will grow and develop their skills.

Please review the below items to ensure you and your player are ready for the assessment.  If your child is in T-Ball or Rookies they will not need to attend assessments, only Caps and above will be assessingbut we feel it is important for our SMLL community and parents to be aware of what takes place for each division so you are better prepared as your child moves up.

Assessment Day Expectations

  • Please arrive 15-30 minutes early to check in and warm up.
  • Please come to the time frame of your child’s League Age. The league age of a Little Leaguer is based on the player’s age as of August 31 of the current year. This date is the same that many schools use for student registration, which allows Little Leaguers to play with their classmates.  Use the League-Age Calculator link to determine if you are unsure.
  • Each player will receive a large label sticker with a designated number at Check-in
  • Each player will be given the opportunity to perform (1) Batting/bunting (2) Fielding fly balls (3) Fielding ground balls (4) Throwing (5) Run in competition with children having the same league age.
  • Each skill will be graded on a 1-5 scale. A total of score of 25 points is the highest rating a player can receive. Those scores would then be utilized as managers work through the draft process.
