Gear and Fields
This page explains what equipment Serra Mesa Little League provides, what families are
responsible for, and where our teams usually practice and play. Our goal is to help you
feel prepared for the season and to make getting to the fields as easy as possible.
What the League Provides
Your registration fee includes core uniform items and shared equipment so every player
can participate even if they do not have their own gear.
In a typical Spring season, Serra Mesa Little League provides:
- Team jersey
- Team hat
- Socks
- Belt
- Shared bats that meet Little League standards
- Shared batting helmets
- Catcher’s gear for each team
Spring registration also usually includes a team photo package and a player trophy or
similar recognition. In Fall Ball the uniform package may be slightly different and
photo packages are not always included.
What Families Provide
Families are responsible for providing basic personal gear for each player. If the cost
of equipment is a concern, please let us know. We want every player to be able to play.
Most families provide:
- Baseball pants in the color chosen by the team manager.
- Glove that fits your player’s hand and position.
- Cleats with rubber or plastic soles. Metal cleats are allowed for
Juniors only.
- Protective cup for male players, especially catchers and older divisions.
- Water bottle labeled with the player’s name.
- Sunscreen and weather appropriate layers.
Optional but common:
- Personal batting helmet that meets current safety standards.
- Personal bat that is Little League approved for the player’s division.
- Batting gloves.
If you are unsure whether a bat or helmet is allowed for Little League play, please
check with your manager or visit the Resources page for links to current Little League
bat rules.
Labeling and Safety Tips
Baseball gear can look very similar from player to player. We encourage families to:
- Write your player’s name on gloves, helmets, water bottles and hats.
- Check that helmets fit snugly and stay level on the head.
- Make sure cleats fit properly and are tied securely.
- Confirm that all bats are Little League approved for the division of play.
Managers and coaches will review basic equipment safety at the start of each season.
Where We Play and Practice
Serra Mesa Little League uses several fields in and around Serra Mesa. Your team’s exact
practice and game locations will be listed on your schedule in GameChanger.
Common fields and facilities include:
- Cabrillo Heights Park – primary home field for many games and some practices.
This is where our snack bar and many league events are held.
- Juarez – used for practices and some games depending on the season.
- Wegeforth – used for practices when available.
- Serra Mesa Recreation Center – used for practices and some events.
- Angier – practice location for certain teams and divisions.
- Kearny Mesa Recreation Center – additional games and practice space as scheduled.
Some upper division teams may also travel to nearby leagues for interleague games. Those
locations will be listed on the schedule when applicable.
Arrival and Sideline Expectations
To help games and practices run smoothly:
- Plan to arrive early enough for your player to be warm and ready by the posted start time.
- Have your player bring their glove, water bottle and any personal gear they use each game.
- Families and spectators should watch from the bleachers or designated viewing areas.
- Spectators should not stand directly behind the backstop or behind home plate.
Parking and Service Road at Cabrillo Heights
Cabrillo Heights Park has a main parking lot that should be used for regular drop off and
parking. The service road near the fields is not a general parking area.
League policy for the service road:
- Parking along the service road is not allowed for regular spectator parking.
- Limited access is permitted for drop off of heavy equipment, delivery of official
league supplies and certain authorized vehicles.
- Authorized vehicles may only remain for a short time and must follow league directions.
Misuse of the service road can affect our permits and field access. Please follow posted
signs and any guidance from league volunteers at the field.
Dogs at the Fields
We know many families enjoy bringing dogs to the park. To keep players and spectators safe:
- Dogs must be on a leash and under control at all times.
- Dogs are not allowed on the playing field or in dugouts.
- Handlers must follow all City of San Diego and league safety rules and clean up after their pets.
If a dog becomes disruptive or unsafe, league volunteers may ask the handler to move farther
from the field or leave the immediate playing area.
